HubSpot custom properties with no description

A custom property without a description leaves the next admin guessing what it means, who owns it, and what depends on it. Find custom properties with an empty description and document the important ones: purpose, owner, allowed values, and what uses them.

PropertiesARCH-007Updated 2026-10-28

Why it matters

New admins, agencies, and integrations rely on property descriptions to use fields correctly.

During migrations and cleanups, undocumented fields are the ones nobody dares to change or remove.

How to find it in HubSpot

  1. In Settings, open Properties and choose an object.
  2. Filter to custom properties (those created by your team rather than HubSpot).
  3. Open each property to see whether its description is empty and where it is used.

How to fix it safely

  1. Start with properties used in workflows, forms, and reports.
  2. Write a one-line description: what it means, who owns it, and the allowed values.
  3. Archive custom properties with no data and no usage, after checking with their owner.
  4. Make "add a description" part of your process for creating any new property.

How Ancil checks this

Rule
ARCH-007
What it looks for
Counts active custom properties with an empty description. It reports only when at least 10 are undocumented and they make up 40% or more of custom properties.
Severity
Info. Warning at 50 or more, or when 75% or more are undocumented.
Evidence shown
The count and share of undocumented custom properties.
Governed fix
Not automated. Ancil identifies the gap. Writing accurate descriptions needs the people who own the fields.
