HubSpot duplicate association labels

Association labels describe how two records relate, such as Decision maker or Billing contact. When two custom labels with the same name exist between the same pair of objects, users pick either one and lists, workflows and reports only follow one of them. Find duplicate labels, agree one meaning per label, and move associations onto the label you keep.

Data modelARCH-012ARCH-013Updated 2026-10-28

Why it matters

Lists, workflows and reports filter on a specific label. If half the decision makers carry one "Decision maker" label and half carry the other, every filter misses half of them.

HubSpot limits how many custom labels each object pair can have. Duplicates and overlapping labels use up that capacity, so a pair close to the limit leaves no room for real future needs.

How to find it in HubSpot

  1. In Settings, open the associations or data model area.
  2. Choose an object pair, such as Contacts and Companies, and view its association labels.
  3. Look for custom labels with the same name, ignoring capital letters and spacing.
  4. Count the custom labels for each pair and note pairs with eight or more.
  5. Check where each duplicate label is used in lists, workflows and reports.

How to fix it safely

  1. Agree the intended relationship model with the teams that use it, with one label per meaning.
  2. Update lists, workflows, reports and integration mappings to use the label you keep.
  3. Move existing associations from the duplicate label to the kept label, testing on a small set of records first.
  4. Remove or rename the duplicate, and review pairs near the limit to merge labels with overlapping meanings.

How Ancil checks this

Rule
ARCH-012, ARCH-013
What it looks for
Reads custom association labels for contact, company, deal and ticket pairs, and for pairs declared by custom objects. Flags custom labels that share a name within the same object pair, ignoring capital letters and spacing. Separately notes object pairs that use eight or more custom labels.
Severity
Warning for duplicate labels. Info for pairs with eight or more custom labels.
Evidence shown
For up to 20 duplicate groups: the object pair, the label and the label type IDs. For crowded pairs: each object pair and its custom label count.
Governed fix
Not automated. Ancil reports the evidence only. Your team, or an INSIDEA expert, merges labels. Ancil does not change association labels automatically.
