HubSpot marketing emails missing a subject line

A marketing email with no subject line is either an abandoned draft or an email that is not ready to send. Filter your email list for drafts, open each one with no subject, and either finish it with an owner or archive it.

Why it matters

The subject line is the first thing a recipient sees and the main driver of opens. An email saved without one has not been through a basic review, so any send built on it starts from an unfinished asset.

Old drafts pile up fast. When the email list is full of unnamed and unfinished drafts, people clone the wrong one, reuse outdated content, or miss the email that was actually meant to go out.

An email with no subject often has other gaps too: no subscription type, no campaign, or no sender details. The missing subject is the easiest symptom to spot.

How to find it in HubSpot

  1. Open Marketing > Email.
  2. Filter or sort the list to show drafts, and sort by last updated date.
  3. Open each draft and check the subject line field in the email settings.
  4. Note the creator and last updated date so you know who to ask.
  5. Check whether the email belongs to a campaign that is still planned or active.

How to fix it safely

  1. Ask the creator or campaign owner whether each email is still needed.
  2. For emails still in use, add a subject line and preview text, then check the sender, subscription type and campaign before any send.
  3. Archive drafts nobody claims. Archiving keeps the history while removing the clutter.
  4. Agree a naming and review standard so new drafts carry an owner and a purpose from the start.

Before you change anything: Do not delete emails that have already been sent. Their performance data may feed campaign and attribution reports.

How Ancil checks this

Rule
MARKETING-006, MARKETING-005
What it looks for
Reads up to 500 marketing email assets and flags any with a blank subject. Drafts are included, because a draft without a subject is still unfinished work. When the portal has at least 100 contacts but Ancil finds no marketing email assets at all, MARKETING-005 adds an info note, since this may simply mean Marketing Hub is not part of the setup.
Severity
MARKETING-006 is a warning. MARKETING-005 is info.
Evidence shown
Names and IDs for up to 50 emails without a subject. For MARKETING-005, the contact count and a marketing email count of zero.
Governed fix
Not automated. Ancil does not change marketing emails. It reports the affected assets, and your team (or an INSIDEA expert) finishes or archives them in HubSpot.
