What is win rate in HubSpot?

Win rate is the percentage of closed deals that were won. The usual formula is closed won deals divided by all closed deals, won plus lost, over a period. In HubSpot it is built from deal stages and close dates.

Win rate tells you how effective the sales process is once a deal is real. It is commonly measured by deal count, but it can also be measured by value, which shows whether you are winning the large deals or only the small ones. Both are useful, and they often tell different stories.

The formula matters. Dividing won deals by all created deals, including open ones, makes win rate look worse during periods of strong pipeline growth. Dividing by closed deals gives a cleaner picture of outcomes. Whichever you use, keep it consistent so the trend means something.

Data hygiene distorts win rate more than people expect. If lost deals are left open instead of being closed as lost, the denominator shrinks and win rate looks inflated. If deals are created late, only after a verbal yes, nearly everything is won and the number says nothing. Multiple pipelines with very different sales cycles should be measured separately.

Use win rate alongside lost reasons. A required closed lost reason property turns a falling win rate into a specific problem, such as price, timing or a competitor, that someone can act on.

Example

Brookline Robotics, a fictional automation vendor, reported a 70% win rate, far above its industry. A review found hundreds of dead deals still open, which kept them out of the calculation. After the team closed them as lost with reasons, the real win rate was 24%, and the lost reasons pointed to a pricing problem in one segment.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving lost deals open, which inflates win rate.
  • Creating deals only after a verbal commitment, so the pipeline contains almost no losses.
  • Mixing pipelines with very different sales cycles into one win rate.
  • Tracking win rate without a required lost reason, so a drop cannot be explained.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good win rate?

It varies widely by industry, deal size and how early deals are created. Compare against your own history and against similar teams rather than a single benchmark.

Should open deals count in win rate?

Usually not. Most teams calculate win rate as won deals divided by won plus lost deals in a period. Including open deals mixes outcomes with work in progress.
