HubSpot deals missing a close date

An open deal with no close date is invisible to time-based forecasts and "closing this month" views. Filter open deals where close date is unknown, have each owner set a realistic date, and make close date required at the stage where a buyer commits to a timeline.

DealsDEAL-006Updated 2026-10-28

Why it matters

HubSpot forecasting, pipeline reports, and most revenue dashboards group deals by close date. A deal without one does not appear in "closing this month" or "this quarter" views, so the pipeline looks smaller than it is and leadership calls the number without it.

A missing close date is also a behavior signal. It usually means nobody has agreed a next step with the buyer.

How to find it in HubSpot

  1. Open CRM > Deals and switch to the table view.
  2. Add the filter Close date is unknown.
  3. Add the filter Deal stage is none of, and select the Closed won and Closed lost stages in every pipeline you use.
  4. Add the Deal owner, Create date, and Last activity date columns.
  5. Save the view as "Open deals missing close date" so you can reuse it.

How to fix it safely

  1. Sort by owner and send each owner their list. The owner should set the date, not an admin guessing it.
  2. Ask for a realistic date. A placeholder such as the last day of the year gives the forecast false confidence.
  3. Close what is dead. If nobody can name a date, move the deal to Closed lost with a reason instead of forcing a date onto it.
  4. Prevent recurrence: in your deal pipeline settings, make Close date a required property when a deal enters the stage where the buyer has agreed a timeline.

Before you change anything: Avoid bulk-setting one date across many deals. It overwrites what owners know and makes the forecast look precise when it is not.

How Ancil checks this

Rule
DEAL-006
What it looks for
Counts open deals (deals in closed stages are excluded) with an empty close date.
Severity
Info below 10 deals. Warning at 10 or more.
Evidence shown
The count, exact where HubSpot provides a total, plus names and links for up to 50 affected deals.
Governed fix
Supported. Ancil drafts the update and shows the exact records and proposed values first. A portal owner approves or rejects it, and a fresh audit confirms the result.

Frequently asked questions

Do closed deals need a close date?

HubSpot typically records a close date when a deal moves to a closed stage. This check focuses on open deals, where a missing date distorts the forecast.

Should close date be required on every deal?

Usually not at creation. Require it at the stage where the buyer has agreed a timeline, so the date reflects a real conversation rather than a guess.
