Empty HubSpot lists and segments

Lists (called segments in newer HubSpot portals) with zero members add clutter to every email, workflow, and report picker, and make it easy to choose the wrong one. Sort lists by size, check whether each empty one is still referenced, then delete or clearly label them.

ListsLIST-002Updated 2026-10-28

Why it matters

Picking an empty list for an email or workflow means nobody receives it, often without anyone noticing.

Large numbers of old lists slow every admin task that involves choosing a list.

How to find it in HubSpot

  1. Open CRM > Segments (Lists in older portals).
  2. Sort by size so lists with zero members appear first.
  3. Open each one and check where it is used: emails, workflows, reports, or ads.

How to fix it safely

  1. Delete empty lists that nothing uses.
  2. For lists kept for future use, add a clear prefix such as [Planned].
  3. If an active list should have members but has none, review its filters.
