HubSpot 302 temporary redirects left in place

A 302 redirect tells browsers and search engines the move is temporary. If a 302 has been in place for more than six months, the move is often permanent in practice. Review each long-lived 302 with its owner, keep it where the move really is temporary, and switch it to a 301 where it is not.

Why it matters

Search engines treat 301 and 302 redirects differently. A permanent move set up as a 302 can leave the old URL in search results longer than you want.

Temporary redirects are often created for a campaign or a migration test and then forgotten. Over time, nobody knows whether they are still needed.

Redirect decisions also affect analytics and campaign links, so they need an owner, not a guess.

How to find it in HubSpot

  1. In Settings, open Content > Domains & URLs, then URL Redirects.
  2. Filter or sort by redirect type and find the 302 (temporary) redirects.
  3. Note the last updated date of each and focus on those older than six months.
  4. Ask the owner of each redirect, or the campaign it served, whether the move is still temporary.

How to fix it safely

  1. Keep a 302 where the move is genuinely temporary, and note when it should be reviewed again.
  2. Change it to a 301 where the move is permanent, after checking the destination is the right final page.
  3. Remove redirects that are no longer needed only after checking inbound links and campaign URLs.
  4. Test the old URL to confirm it reaches the right page in one step.

Before you change anything: Removing a redirect can turn a working link into a 404. Check inbound links and campaign URLs first.

How Ancil checks this

Rule
CMS-005
What it looks for
Reads up to 500 URL redirects and looks only at simple (non-pattern) ones. Flags redirects with a 302 style whose last update was more than 180 days ago.
Severity
Info.
Evidence shown
For up to 50 redirects: the source, destination and last updated date.
Governed fix
Not automated. Redirect changes affect live traffic, so Ancil does not change them. It reports the evidence, and your team (or an INSIDEA expert) updates them in HubSpot.

Frequently asked questions

Should every redirect be a 301?

No. Use a 302 when the original page will come back, for example during a short promotion. Use a 301 when the move is permanent.
