What is property bloat in HubSpot?
Property bloat is the build-up of custom properties in a HubSpot portal that duplicate each other, are no longer used, or have no clear purpose. It makes the data model harder to understand and easier to misuse.

Every team, agency and integration that touches a portal tends to add properties. A form needs a new field, an import brings its own columns, a connector creates fields with its own prefix. Few people remove anything, so over a few years a portal can collect hundreds of custom properties. Typical signs are near-duplicate names such as Industry, Industry type and Company industry, fields labelled test or old, and fields with no description.
Bloat has a real cost. Every extra property appears in filters, report builders, workflow actions and import mappings, so users pick the wrong field and reports disagree. Data gets split across two fields that mean the same thing. New team members cannot tell which field is the real one.
Clean up carefully. A property that looks unused can still feed a workflow, a list, a form, a report or an integration. In Settings, open Properties and check where each candidate is used, and confirm with integration owners before archiving or deleting. Where two fields duplicate each other, choose one, move the data across, update everything that references the other, then retire it.
Prevention is cheaper than cleanup. Give each new property a description, an owner and a clear group, and agree on a short review step before anyone adds a field.
A recruitment agency found three properties for the same idea: Job title, Title and Role from an old import. Reports used all three. The operations lead kept Job title, copied values from the other two where it was empty, updated two lists and one workflow, and then archived the extra fields.
There is no fixed number. The test is whether your team can tell which field to use for each purpose. Hundreds of fields with overlapping names or no descriptions is a strong sign of bloat.
Only after checking where it is used, including integrations that write to it. Archiving first, where available, is safer than deleting, because you can restore it if something breaks.
