Subscription types let contacts choose what they hear about instead of an all-or-nothing choice. A contact can stay subscribed to product updates while unsubscribing from event invitations. Contacts can also unsubscribe from all marketing email at once. HubSpot records each contact’s status for each type, and depending on your settings and subscription, can also record a legal basis for communication.
Subscription types matter because they control who can actually be emailed. If every email goes out under one generic type, a contact who wanted to stop event invitations has to unsubscribe from everything. If types are vague or inactive, the preferences page confuses people and opt-out rates rise.
Good setups use a short list of clearly named types that match how you really email: for example, Newsletter, Product updates, Events and Offers. Each has a plain description that appears on the preferences page. Forms that collect consent map to the right type, and emails are always sent under the most specific type that fits.
Consent and email rules differ by country and change over time. Decide your subscription types, consent wording and legal basis with a responsible person in your company, such as legal or compliance. This page explains how the feature works and is not legal advice.
